"A papier maché lobster head"

Plusieurs fois par semaine, je pense à cette citation de "Love actually": "What did my brother do today? He stood up and fought for his country. And what did I do? I made a papier maché lobster head." Bon heureusement, mon frère n'est pas premier ministre, n'empêche cette citation me poursuit et la semaine prochaine Margot va participer à sa première "nativity play". Pour les non-initiés: les enfants jouent l'histoire de Noël devant leur famille. Bref Margot n'est pas un homard (thank God!) mais un ange, fastoche non? Non... d'abord il fallait lire les petites lignes: pour les anges, pas d'ailes, pas d'auréole et robe courte, bref pas grand chose donc. Je me suis donc lancée dans la confection d'un costume d'ange court, sans ailes et sans auréole. Patron de la chemise de nuit de ce livre (oui c'est vrai j'ai la collection complète, que voulez vous je suis faible...) avec tissu à paillettes argentées pour faire un peu festif.

Several times a week, I am reminded of this quote from "Love actually": "What did my brother do today? He stood up and fought for his country. And what did I do? I made a papier maché lobster head." Thankfully my brother is not prime minister but still, this quote sticks with me and next week, Margot will be doing her first nativity play. Margot is not a lobster (thank God!) but an angel, easy peasy? Not so much...first you had to read the fine prints: for the angels, short dress, no halo and not wings attached, not much then.... So I started making an angel costume, short, without any wings or halo. I used the night dress pattern from this book (so I have the entire collection... I am weak...) with a sparkly fabric to make it a bit more festive.

Premier essayage, la robe arrivait au dessus de la cheville... en Maman obéissante j'ai donc choisi de supprimer le volant du bas. Toute contente d'avoir fini, youpi! Je n'attendais que le flex à paillettes pour coller des ailes à mon ange parce que pas d'ailes du tout je trouvais ça tristoune. Sauf que le lendemain matin quand j'ai vu les autres costumes....ils étaient tous longs et munis d'ailes!!!! Aaaaaaargh!!!!! Alors Margot au désespoir, peer pressure, tout ça tout ça, j'ai remis le volant et j'ai fait des ailes... Une autre maman m'a dit pour me consoler qu'au moins avec 3 filles il serait réutilisé mais avec ma chance Valentine sera l'âne (hein Bérénice?!).

When Margot first tried it on, it went just above the ankle so because I always do what I am told (hum hum) I decided to remove the ruffle at the bottom of the dress. So happy to be done, yay! I was only waiting for sparkly film to stick wings at the back of the dress because I thought no wings at all was just too sad. Only the next all the moms were carrying long dresses and angels wings!!!!!! Aaaaaargh!!!! Margot was so sad, peer pressure and so on I ended up sewing the ruffle back on and making wings.... To make me feel better, another mom told me that at least with three gilrs I was going to get some use out of it but with my luck, Valentine will be the donkey.

Je ne suis pas sûre que les maîtresses vont adorer les clochettes mais je n'ai pas pu résister...

Not sure the teachers are going to love the little bells but I just couldn't resist...
